Microsoft Word Documents and Fixus

Fixus allows users to edit Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX, RTF) documents and to directly save them back into the Fixus platform. Provided they have Word installed on their computer, the procedure outlined below will assist users when addressing any potential issues they may experience with editing documents externally of Fixus .

  1. From the Client Episode locate the Documents tab.
  2. From Documents click Edit.
  3. Click on Edit
    1. If the browser displays a Warning then click ‘Open this link’ and optionally tick the ‘Always open files of this type’.

  1. MS Word will open and the document may be edited (see also the Troubleshooting section below).
    • The Documents list will also change while a document is being edited – a padlock icon will be displayed next to the file name and while being edited the ‘Edit’ option will not be shown in the Document property list. The document can be unlocked by closing Word or logging out of Fixus.

  1. Clicking Save (or Ctrl+S or Cmd-S) will automatically update the original document in Fixus.

Logging out of Fixus will disable editing on any documents in Word still open. Save a local copy of the changes or log into Fixus and re-Edit the document and manually copy the changes over.

Question Mark Troubleshooting

Included in Word are a number of security features to protect users from malicious documents. Fixus also implements features ensure users are authorised to access documents and limits the Edit features.

In cases where users cannot edit their documents or receive unexpected messages then adjusting their Word Trust Centre settings may be required. The procedure outlined below will assist users to adjust these settings.

Note: Some organisations will require their IT Department to make the changes if the user does not have permission.

Adjust Word Trust Centre Settings

  1. Open MS Word and go to File menu in the top left.
  2. Click on Options all the way down the bottom:
  3. Select Trust Center, then Trust Center Settings.
  4. Then go to Trusted Locations
  5. Select Allow Trusted Locations on my network and then click Add New Location.
  6. Type or paste your Fixus instance domain name into the Path field, and tick the ‘Subfolders of this location are also trusted’
  7. Re-try to edit the document and the warning and ‘Enable Edit’ button should not be seen.

Upload Failed

When a user logs out of Fixus or they lose internet access then the connection to the document is expired automatically and changes cannot be made.

If an attempt is made to save changes to Fixus then Word will report an UPLOAD FAILED message. The changes will NOT be saved and the user should re-login to Fixus and Edit the document again, and then manually copy the changes to the new document.

Do not attempt to use the ‘Sign In’ button as it will not correctly authenticate against Fixus – perform a new login to Fixus and Edit the document again.
